Boston is located upon Massachusetts’s Shawmut Peninsula, which lies at the mouths of the Charles and Mystic Rivers. Both the rivers flow into Boston`s inner harbor and then into the Boston Harbor, which forms a part of the Massachusetts Bay leading ultimately to the North Atlantic Ocean. A Protestant religious sect called the Puritans founded Boston in 1630, and declared it as the capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The area of Boston was 48 square miles (2000). It is elevated at 15 to 29 feet above sea level, and the proximity to water ensures fog and humidity. The climate is wet almost throughout the year, with frequent rains in summer and spring, and snowfall in winter. The Atlantic breezes blow into full-fledged storms known as “nor’easters.”
The population in the year 2000 was 589,141 with males numbering 283,588 (48.1%) and females numbering 305,553 (51.9%).
